Ham

I've complained before about groceries here being more than I'm used to paying (and we were in Seattle, mind, not exactly known for a low cost of living!). I *think* I'm finding out ways to get around some of that - learning which stores have better prices on which items, and - especially now that we have a fridge/freezer -buying in bulk. There's a store here called CostULess, which is just like a Sam's Club but you don't have to pay for membership - but you can get large/"family-sized" items for a lower price. I found a ham there for $1.49/lb, still not really cheap for ham, but a good price on meat compared to what we see at the grocery store.

Of course, one ham is a lot of meat for two people, but that's great because leftovers=free meals in my accounting. I am going to glaze/bake it for supper tonight. With the ham bone, we might make NOLA-style red beans... Of course there will be ham sandwiches, and ... what else?

Everything I can think of to do with ham seems too wintertime-y to eat in such a tropical climate... I guess this is because ham is a wintertime food, a preserved meat for eating when things like beans and potatoes and cheeses are also being eaten, in weather when hot hearty heavy starchy foods are the most satisfying...

But there must be fresh/spicy/clean-tasting ham dishes out there somewhere, right? What else is good to do with leftover ham?

Any ideas?

  1. I'll keep an eye out, but so far I'm only finding weird things like, "Ham and pasta salad". It's weird because the recipe doesn't sound good.

Keep in mind, miss Guam, that anything that can have spam in it, could have ham instead?
