Guam's water is so bad that when you clean the dishes and leave them in the rack to dry, you come back to find them covered in white powder. It's so bad that a pan of water gets a skin on top when you heat it on the stove. It's so bad that the Guam Water Authority is always making announcements about how it's safe to drink the water...
It's so bad that it killed our coffeemaker in less than six months - even after we filtered it with a Pur filter! The coffee maker became slower and slower, to the point that three, four, five hours later it would still be trying to force out a trickle of hot water. So I treated it with cleaner specifically made to de-lime coffee makers. Every day for a week. Almost no improvement. So then I treated it with vinegar. And then I took it apart and looked inside. The heating tube was completely calcified.
So I treated it with straight CLR, which fizzed and bubbled in the tubes but still couldn't clear them.
So, we gave up and got a new coffee maker. Only $20 at Kmart, so it's not a huge loss (glad we got the cheapest one to begin with) - the price of three trips to Starbuck's* for both of us.
And we're looking into getting bottled water service for our apartment!
*Not that there is a Starbuck's here...

So are there no coffee shops at all, or just no Starbucks? Now I'm curious.
ReplyDeleteThere's a coffee shop near our house that has skeletons on it and so far everything I've tried there has been awesome. If you're ever in Salt Lake City again (before we both move to Ann Arbor of course) then I'll take you there!
Ahh, that sounds so cool!
ReplyDeleteThere are some coffee shops here, but nothing really good. You know, sometimes small local coffee shops are really awesome and so much better than starbucks... and sometimes they just don't have their act together, serve bad coffee, charge too much, and have lousy service. Unfortunately, that's what the Guam coffee shops have been like, in my experience... :(
That is a sad thing, and I know what you're saying about local places.
ReplyDeleteAnother great thing about the skeleton coffee place (since I'm now certain that I can gloat) is that there was a lion serving the drinks. By lion I mean a kind of a husky white boy with a lion shaped hair-do. Even though it kind of seems like a hipster sort of a place, he was really nice! He gave me a signature sweet chai that was very delicious.
Lion is funny! Chai chai... I had a chai smoothie here from one of the local coffee shops, and it was such a disappointment...
ReplyDeleteOn the other hand, there are bubble tea stands all over the island - but I haven't actually tried one yet!
