We won last night! The final score was 5-4. Lots of men showed up, so Nick didn't get to play - after the previous night, I'm not sure if he felt like playing, anyways. I was an EP again, and I walked at my only at-bat. It's alright!
After the game, we stayed for a great barbecue - chicken, oysters, hotdogs (I think), crabmeat salad, rice, some really excellent baked salmon, and a limitless supply of Bud Light. I never drank Bud Light before Guam - I'll probably never drink it again if we leave Guam - but on Guam, it is unavoidable. It's the official unofficial drink of softball, and after our long, hard practices on these muggy tropical nights, it is a sports drink without equal!
We had a really interesting conversation with an older guy, a teammate who is sort of a baseball savant. He plays on the seniors league now, and our softball team, and probably any other team that gives him a chance to play ball. He told us about how he became good at throwing by flinging rocks at snails - the big tree-climbing snails here on Guam - ages ago when he was too little to throw a baseball. He's a fielder, and a pitcher, and he has played on winning teams for Guam in international baseball tournaments. He's given me good advice before, things like "watch the ball into your glove." Yesterday he told us that he had killed and barbecued a hog that morning - talk of wild pigs and deer that one can find on Guam; hunting season on the Air Force Base to keep the wild deer from overrunning the landing strip. I asked him if he makes sausage when he kills a hog; he doesn't, but others do, and he told me where to go to get local homemade sausage.
Good conversation. Fascinating people. Thank goodness for softball on Guam!
Even with trying some random alcohols, I haven't been able to tolerate any beer at all, let alone Bud Light. I weep for you.
ReplyDeleteWild Hog Sausage on the other hand, makes me curious.
Also, since you're out in the ocean, when you have crab meat salad, is it really made out of crabs?
You know, I am not convinced it was real crab meat, but it was still tasty. :D
ReplyDeleteI know what you mean about beer. I only got to be able to drink it because of our good friend from New Orleans who brews his own - the homebrewed stuff tastes nothing like beer from a store, it tastes delicious. But that starts you down the slippery slope that begins with heady imported brews that come in large single bottles like wine and must be served in the proper glass, and ends with Bud Light drunk from a can.
Haha! That's the same reason I never started myself on coffee! :D
