update-less update

Well, the adjuster never showed up!
Should we attribute that to malice, or incompetence?

My theory is that they did it on purpose - they want to exert some control over claimants, to give themselves the psychological upper hand (used car salesmen are notorious for doing this, too).  But maybe that's giving them too much credit...

ANYways, they'll show up at some point. I think Nick will call them today if we haven't heard from them by the time the Saints game is over.

Poor Nick was going to go watch the game on his lunch break, but an office meeting got rescheduled to lunch time! Noooooes! Hopefully he'll still be able to catch the last quarter, or at least the last few minutes.

  1. I don't necessarily mean this in a bad way, but sometimes you're like a different person. ^_^

  2. Hah! Because I am Saints-obsessed, or because I have no patience for the insurance guy? ;)

  3. It's mostly the football, but it's partly this idea that people don't show up on purpose as a power play. Did you learn that in law school? I wonder if that sort of thing would be useful to know, or if it would make you become paranoid eventually?

  4. Hm. I think it came from my law school negotiations class, and from reading the "confessions of a car salesman"
    http://www.edmunds.com/confessions/
(and I see they have one for claims adjusters now too! Gotta read it next!)
...it illustrates, among other things, the idea of asserting control in a negotiation setting. Since the Other Car's insurance company is basically the opponent in a negotiation with us, it makes sense to me that they would play similar games...

I think it's useful to think about if you're in a sales or negotiation situation - how is the other person trying to manipulate you? Are you actually agreeing to what you want, or are you being pressured into something you didn't really agree to? Since people out there play these games, it's good to be on guard against them!

Though actually, after I met the adjuster yesterday, I think he was just being disorganized when he didn't show up on Friday or Monday as he said he would... he didn't seem like he was all that into his job.

  5. Wow. Sounds like I should do some reading myself! I absolutely had troubles the last time I bought a car!
