Luck and luck

Last weekend we were at the AG's office's annual labor day barbecue, and it was fantastic. Lots of friends and lots of food, right down by the water under the palm trees. THIS is what living on Guam is all about!

At one point, I got dive-bombed by a praying mantis, just a small one. I tried to brush it away, but it landed on my clothes and stuck. Everyone who saw it said "oh, that's good luck!" ... apparently around here, a praying mantis landing on you is supposed to bring good luck.

Well, then Thursday came around and I heard that the MPRE scores had been released. I was really nervous as I logged on to check mine - we need an 80 to pass in Guam, which is higher than some jurisdictions (though not as high as California's 86). Anyways, I got 124! And then I thought, "I hope I didn't use up all of my good luck on a ridiculously high MPRE score. I still want to pass the bar!"

A couple of hours later, I got a phone call that the bar results were up. I could NOT check them on my own - too nervous! - so I waited for Nick to get home and check with me. All the while, I was thinking "That darn MPRE score! What a waste of good luck!"

When Nick got home, the website with the bar results would not load. I messed around with the cached pages in Google, and finally got access to the page I needed. As we all know now, I passed! And I thought, "thank goodness I still had a little luck left."

The next day was the opening game of the NFL season, and it was the Saints versus the Vikings, a rematch of last year's NFC championship game. It was important! I happened to be cleaning the home of a friend with a TV that day (helping her get ready to move to a new place), so I was able to turn the TV on and watch. I really wanted the Saints to win! But I was perfectly willing to have used up all the good luck on the Bar and MPRE.

And then the Saints won! Does one little praying mantis really produce that much good luck?

But there was more...

That night, there was a going-away party for someone in the AG's office. A bunch of people said "congratulations!" when they saw me. I figured they were referring to the bar exam, until someone said "So, are you excited for Monday?" ... it turned out that a number of people in the prosecutor's office were under the impression that I'd been hired to work there, and I would be starting Monday.

As far as I know, this is not true - but how far do I know?  Guam is a crazy place. Could this be even more good luck?

  1. Some of that was luck from the Mantis surely, but really? You know as well as the rest of it that most of it was very very hard work.... maybe the the luck part is all about getting it all at once with a bow on top. Very nice!
