Mr. Darcy knows...

"A lady's imagination is very rapid. It jumps from an interview to a paycheck, from a paycheck to shopping, in a moment. I knew you would be picking out shoes."

-Mr. Darcy

Or something like that. Mr. Darcy was surrounded by females: a sister, an aunt, a female cousin, his best friend's sisters, and (at one time) a mother. He knew more about ladies than he let on.

I'm just finding it very hard to study with the internet at hand. It seems that shoes for lady lawyers is a topic of the day (see, e.g., http://abovethelaw.com/2010/08/can-you-wear-peep-toe-shoes-to-court-women-judges-weigh-in/; http://www.abajournal.com/mobile/article/are_peep-toe_shoes_too_provocative_for_women_lawyers/ ); and nordstrom, neiman marcus and saks fifth avenue, dot com, are right there at my fingertips, tempting, teasing...

(For the record? Closed-toed shoes. Always appropriate. Nothing wrong with erring on the side of formality. Plus you can't wear stockings with open-toed shoes, and I don't think it's quite right to go stocking-less, especially in hot dirty Guam, where the heat makes your bare legs stick together (ew!). I reserve the right to change my mind, however! My favorite shoes on earth are peep-toes...
