Two earthquakes yesterday - a 5.5 just north of the island, and a 6.2 which was a bit farther away and only faintly felt. But the 5.5 was quite a shaky shaker that went on for 15 or 20 seconds - long enough to say "whoa - did you feel that? Is it still going? Oh, it's still going. Oh hey, that's pretty strong - !" In the meantime I'm running to the door. Earthquakes trigger my flight instinct. I can never tell when they're actually over, because my heart pounds so loudly in my ears that I continue to hear the rumble long after it has ceased.
That's the second earthquake we've felt in this new apartment - the first was the morning after we moved in, a 5.4 that rattled the windows a little bit as we drank coffee.
It seems that Guam gets a 5.something every month or so. If you go to the USGS world earthquake map, there is usually a medium-sized square somewhere on the Marianas. If there isn't one, you know that a new one is coming soon. Until yesterday, it had been so long since the last quake that I was getting antsy waiting for the next quake - just quake already!

I think that would drive me nuts. Apparently I live on the side of SLC that is right on a fault line. it hasn't been active in a long, long, long, super, long time, but they say when it goes, it's going to be a very large quake.
ReplyDeleteYou guys have had a little earthquake since we've been on Guam - I know because I monitor the earthquake maps constantly ;) ... It was just a tiny one, though, so tiny that you would never have been able to feel it... I forget when it was, but probably sometime back in April...
