Liberation

July 21 is Liberation Day on Guam! It is the holiday marking the day that US troops arrived in 1944 to free Guam from the Japanese imperial forces. The landing and ensuing fighting are known as the Battle of Guam

Interesting - here on Guam, there are still visible scars from WWII, and there are still people living who remember the occupation - concentration camps, torture, massacres. Less than a lifetime ago, on this warm lazy island. It's something to think about...

Liberation day is a holiday, so Nick had yesterday off. There was a big parade and celebration down in the capital - the biggest party of the year! But I couldn't take the day off from preparing for the bar exam, so Nick stayed home too and did a bunch of projects around the house... maybe not the greatest holiday, but liberation means the freedom to do whatever you want, even the freedom not to have fun, I guess... Still, it was a good day. We'll celebrate Liberation day properly next year.

The bar exam is next week Wednesday and Thursday. Today is Thursday, so now there is officially less than a week left to prepare. Please don't think that this blog is abandoned if there aren't any new posts for a while - just check back next Friday and hopefully I'll be back on it!

  1. In SLC they celebrate "Pioneer Day" which is really tough because it's supposed to be all about Utah becoming a state, but somehow becomes all about John Smith creating a Mormon settlement instead. (Which is kind of awkward for the rest of us.)

  2. Hmm. Nick had a (Filipino) co-worker who was making jokes in the context of Liberation day, saying "If you like your freedom, thank a white person!" ... and randomly thanking white people all day.
So maybe in SLC, you'd say "If you like Utah, thank a Mormon!" ... and then randomly thank the Mormons you know.
