Six months....

...'til Christmas Eve. On Guam, where America's Christmas begins.

Hard to believe that last Christmas was six months ago already. I guess we can't really get much farther away from a Christmas - past or future - than we are right now. But the years do seem to go by faster than they used to...

Ah well. I was just thinking about how, during Christmas season we're all "I wish it could be Christmas every day! - Why can't every day be like Christmas?" But then New Year's comes and goes and we forget about it. Well, it's the end of June and I'm back to thinking that Christmas every day - or every week, or at least once a month - would be pretty excellent. Not the presents, but the gatherings with loved ones and the carols-in-the-heart and the baking and the decorating and the anticipation of something wonderful...

I wonder where we'll be next Christmas?

  1. I noticed while I was reading this that there is a fine line between a feeling of nostalgia and a feeling of depression.

You are good at holidays though, so if there's a fireworks show on Guam, maybe you can watch fireworks go off over the ocean, grill something special, and be a little bit satisfied for now.

  2. That's true about nostalgia and depression - or maybe "melancholy" is a better word for it... but maybe a little melancholy nostalgia is not a bad thing. It makes you realize just how much you appreciate and love people and times that are worthy of being loved and appreciated! And you can be superficially melancholy but still very satisfied and happy with the here-and-now.

Holiday season on Guam is coming up, though! There is the 4th of July, and two weeks later there is "Liberation Day," which is the celebration of when the US saved Guam from Japan. Apparently there is a carnival, and parades, and all kinds of good stuff - it sounds pretty great!
Unfortunately, it's just a week before the bar exam - I think I won't get to enjoy it much this year! Maybe Nick will go to the parades and tell all of us all about it ;)

  3. It *would* be nice to hear from Nick too, but it's almost unbearable to think of you studying when you could be enjoying a parade! You appreciate them so well you should quit the bar exam and watch parades and enjoy holidays instead :P (I'm sure it pays really well.)

Also, I think 'superficial melancholy' is a good way to put it.
