Now that we have a kitchen...

We can make FOOD! YAY!!!!

We got some pans and knives at Ross:

http://www.amazon.com/KitchenAid-14-Piece-Stainless-Steel-Knife/dp/B000GYTB9G/ref=cm_cr_pr_pb_t  (Our set is slightly different from the link; it must be last year's model!)

... the pans were a disappointment when we took them out of the box - three of them had been USED! Used, and not cleaned very well (er, like our apartment? Let's just say that "not cleaned very well" describes most of Guam...). They were the best set we could find, though, and a decent price, so I just swallowed my irritation and cleaned the darn things properly - and I guess it is sanitary, because it is stainless steel. They work fine - nice heavy bottoms distribute the heat surprisingly well, no burning or sticking. I'll still be looking for a nonstick frying pan at some point, and a roasting pan and maybe a "chicken fryer," but these cover our basic needs really well.

The knives, on the other hand, are surprisingly excellent.  I'd been looking at a different set at the store, when a man told me "You don't want those, they're no good!" ... I asked him which knives he'd recommend, and he pointed out the kitchenaid set. I was leery of the all-stainless design (looks slippery!) but I reasoned that it'll be easier to keep clean, and the price was really nice. So, we got them home and they're great: wonderfully sharp, well designed, balanced, feel great in the hand, and easy to clean. Jackpot!

  1. Good deal. I'm horrible at buying pots pans and knives. We currently have a wooden block set but the two knives we bought separately are the only good ones.

  2. Get a cheap little knife sharpener! I had a low, low, low price low quality knife block set in Seattle, and every couple times I used a knife I would run it through a sharpener - I got this one at Ikea: http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/57145296 but I think there are simliar things at most stores that carry kitchen goods.
It made the knives sharp enough to be useful, and since they were cheap I didn't worry about running them through the dishwasher; just sharpened them up again next time.
