In the middle of the night...

Can't sleep! It's 3 am here; noon in Texas (the time zone my computer is still set to).

We lost power for a few hours Sunday afternoon - from Tumon, where we live, to at least halfway across the island, where we were on our way to visit a friend - probably farther, but that's all that we observed firsthand. That is four or more villages affected, anyways; anywhere else it would have been a pretty substantial blackout; but here, it doesn't even get a mention in the news!

Our friend says that every outage is caused by a snake: "at the power plant, they have a freezer full of snakes. Whenever there's a power failure, they pull out a snake and throw it over a powerline and take a picture. To prove that it was caused by a snake."

I don't know whether to believe that, but it seems plausible, at least!

UPDATE: oh, here's an article about it:

That website is the third place I go for news, after guampdn.com and kuam.com ... maybe I should start going there first?

  1. I need to get some frozen snakes! Everytime I don't feel like cooking dinner I'll throw a snake on the stove and say, "Oh no! This'll take hours to fix! We'll have to go out."
