Now that we're here somewhat permanently, with job security, we're thinking about buying a house or condo - but if we do, we want to have a contract in place by April 30, when the first-time-homebuyers'-tax-credit expires. Fortunately, we got a recommendation for a Realtor (R) to help us with our search for a place to live. Not knowing anyone, we were really glad for a recommendation: in our observance (not experience, since neither of us has ever worked with one before), real estate agents appear to be overpaid and unprofessional. Is that too harsh? Just look at any real estate listing and judge for yourself, keeping in mind that s/he will get 6% of the closing price of the property. Yikes!
So, we were glad when we were told that person X is very good and very professional. We contacted X immediately, saying "hey, we want to to buy something RIGHT AWAY!" And received an email back, a little while later, telling us to get back in touch when we had a phone number.
Unfazed, I wrote back again and mentioned a couple of listings that we were eager to look at, and asked when X would be available to meet up and talk or look at the places. No reply until the middle of the night, when an email mysteriously appeared saying "I'm on my way to a meeting, I'll get back to you later." And that was over 24 hours ago, with no followup.
So, is this just the pace of life on Guam? Or should we contact a different real estate agent?
I'm thinking it's the latter...
That sounds about right, but be careful, you never know when a realtor thinks that you've created some sort of a sacred realtory trust oath and you'll be a terrible person for going to someone else. They're *very* touchy!!!
ReplyDeleteAH! I remember that happening to your mom, and she was really upset about the whole deal. Scary! At least we haven't "shaken hands" yet :P
ReplyDeleteYup! You tell those Realtors to keep their hands to themselves!
